reusing the DIFFICULT TO RECYCLE

TURNING DECOMMISSIONED LIFE JACKETS, BROKEN WETSUITS, BANNERS AND INFLATABLES INTO UNIQUE HANDMADE CREATIONS

PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING A CHANGE

Welcome to Flotsam Flo!

Located in beautiful Cornwall, Flotsam Flo is driven by a passion for making a difference. I’m Kate, and every product you see here is handmade with a commitment to reducing plastic waste.

Plastic pollution is a significant issue, with many materials like wetsuits, life jackets, inflatables, and banners ending up as waste due to their difficult recyclability. At Flotsam Flo, I tackle this challenge head-on by repurposing these materials into unique, handmade items just for you.

Your support allows me to create more of these innovative products and contribute to preserving our stunning landscapes and environment. Each item is crafted in Cornwall and often retains original features—such as stoppers from inflatables or whistles from life jackets—making every piece truly one-of-a-kind.

Before my brain hemorrhage, I spent years teaching Art and Design Technology. Now, I channel that experience into upcycling and sewing workshops near Redruth and as a guest speaker, raising awareness about plastic pollution and demonstrating sustainable alternatives.

Join me in turning waste into wonderful creations and making a positive impact on our world, one item at a time.

"There's no such word as can't..."

A Personal Journey with Flotsam Flo

In 2019, I had a life changing brain haemorrhage which made me realise tomorrow is never promised and that I need to follow my dreams. Granny Florence was an inspiration who told me there was "no such word as can't" and that "anything is possible". I wouldn't have made such a positive recovery without this upbringing and hence, I named my business after her. You can read more about my story here.

At Flotsam Flo, I use this inspiration by partnering with charities close to my heart. I repurpose their waste materials into new items, helping to reduce environmental impact and support their missions. If you're a business looking to enhance sustainability, I offer solutions like turning old uniforms into cushion covers or transforming banners into key rings for corporate gifts and events. Discover more about our business collaborations here.

While I strive to use as much upcycled and repurposed material as possible, some components like zips, straps, and thread are not always available to repurpose. We do our best to repurpose where we can—such as using lifting slings for straps—but certain parts need to be new to ensure functionality and quality. We are actively working to source more sustainable options.

I’m incredibly grateful for all your donations, but I am currently pausing donations as I organise and prepare for the summer season. Your support has been invaluable, and I look forward to continuing our efforts to make a positive impact with every item we create.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Read more about our story and our efforts here.
