The Story Behind the Message
"There's no such word as can't." These are the words my Granny Florence lived by and they have shaped my journey.
My story has never been a straight line. From a young age, creativity was a huge part of who I was. I dreamed of becoming a fine artist, inspired by the animals and horses I loved, but after losing confidence in my abilities, I took a different path and studied Graphic Design at university.
Creativity, however, never left me. Through design, sewing and experimenting with discarded materials, I found a new way to express myself. Inspired by Granny Florence and her belief that anything was possible, Flotsam Flo was born, transforming materials into something different, useful and beautiful.
But Flotsam Flo became about much more than upcycling. It became a story about resilience, creativity and finding opportunity in unexpected places.
Life has brought challenges I never expected, including recovering from a life-changing brain haemorrhage and facing moments where I had to find new ways forward. Through every setback, I have learnt that challenges do not have to define us. They can shape us, teach us and reveal strengths we never knew we had.
Today, I share my journey through inspiring talks for schools, businesses and community groups. Through honesty, creativity and humour, I encourage audiences to think differently, embrace challenges and remember that there is always another way forward.
If you’d like to book a talk or collaborate, you can find more information on my talks here - please feel free to contact me to find out more.
Although the making side of Flotsam Flo has now come to an end, I’m incredibly proud of everything it achieved: the products, the workshops and the community it built around creativity and environmental action.
Thank you so much for your support over the years. It has meant everything.
