"Kate is also the most inspirational person I have ever met"
These are the words from the person who nominated me for the 2023 West Country Women's Awards: “Kate's ethos is to collect material from within Cornwall and then source sustainable and reusable packaging to ensure the green concept runs right through the business. As a result, this concept has developed its own mini circular economy within the Duchy. Aside from this, Kate is also the most inspirational person I have ever met. Kate's outlook on life is one of pure positivity, her passion to enhance the Cornish environment shines through so clearly, and her attitude towards helping others is incredible. All this after suffering a bleed on the brain a few years ago forcing her to follow her dreams. Kate stands out as an innovator of the highest calibre with a desire and will to force an environmental change. Flotsam Flo may only be in its second year but it will become a powerhouse business which will continue to capture imagination and inspire people to make better choices.”
In January 2023, Flotsam Flo underwent a significant transformation, thanks to the incredible support from Biffa.
Recognising the potential of our mission to upcycle discarded beach and leisure materials into unique, handmade accessories, Biffa provided us with a dedicated studio space at their Redruth depot. This support not only gave us a creative workspace but also opened doors to new collaborations and business opportunities.
Peter Giddings, in particular, has become an invaluable mentor to me. His belief in what Flotsam Flo stands for has been a cornerstone in refining our vision and helping me stay confident, even in moments of doubt. With Peter’s guidance and Biffa’s ongoing support, Flotsam Flo has been able to further its mission of sustainability and creativity. We’re truly grateful for the impact they’ve had on our journey and excited for the future ahead.
A Proud Milestone: Flotsam Flo at The West Country Women Awards
In 2023, Flotsam Flo reached the semi-finalist stage for the Green Business of the Year category at The West Country Women Awards . I was completely amazed and thrilled by this recognition. Competing against businesses and organisations from across the entire South West, including a staggering 1,428 nominations, being selected as one of the 107 semi-finalists was an incredible honour.
What truly touched me was not just making it to the semi-finals, but also learning the reasons behind my nomination. Reading the feedback was profoundly uplifting and reaffirmed the value of our work. It’s moments like these that make all the hard work worthwhile, and I’m deeply grateful for the recognition and support.
The Journey of Flotsam Flo: A Memorable Achievement
Flotsam Flo began its journey at the end of 2021, fuelled by a passion for sustainability and supported by Cultivator Cornwall and the guidance of mentor, Clive Kessell. Encouraged by their support, I entered the Cornwall Sustainability Awards, hoping for an enjoyable evening, we were among much larger and more established organisations.
To my surprise, Flotsam Flo stood out. The judges were highly impressed with our innovative approach to closing the loop on waste, including broken paddling pools, unwanted banners, and old wetsuits. Their recognition culminated in awarding us a Judge’s Commendation for Circular Economy.
Receiving this award was both overwhelming and exhilarating—a night I will cherish forever. It has not only validated our efforts but also bolstered my confidence as we continue to grow and make a positive impact.
