Flotsam Flo Cross Body Bag Workshop – 2.5 Hours
Join us for a 2.5-hour workshop near Redruth where you’ll learn how to create your own Cross Body Bag from upcycled plastic materials like banners and inflatables. Discover the art of upcycling as you transform materials that are challenging to recycle into a unique and functional accessory. The examples shown are from previous workshops, and because we use reclaimed materials, each bag will be one-of-a-kind.
Workshop Details:
- Duration: 2.5 hours
- Capacity: Maximum of 3 participants for personalised support
- Experience Needed: None! We will guide you through every step, even if you’ve never sewn before.
What You’ll Learn:
- Operating a sewing machine
- Workspace health and safety
- Sewing techniques for plastic materials
- Using a simple pattern
- Sewing zips
- Adding adjustable straps
- Applying applique designs
- Cutting and securing straps to prevent fraying
- Creating and adding a simple pocket
- Upcycling methods for plastic materials
Knowledge Required:
No prior sewing experience is required, though familiarity with sewing zippers will be helpful. Our workshops are designed to cater to various skill levels, with tasks and techniques that can enhance your abilities. Sessions are for adults (18+), with plans to offer youth workshops in the near future.

About Your Tutor:
Kate, founder of Flotsam Flo, has been working with plastic materials for three years and sewing with reclaimed material for many more. She is a qualified secondary school teacher with over a decade of experience in Design and Technology, including Textiles. Kate holds a First Class Honours degree in Graphic Design and is an active artist (check out Kate Doran Artist on Facebook). She also led creative community workshops for ‘Hellfire Kernow’ in Redruth.
What to Bring:
No specific items are required, but if you have plastics, broken inflatables, or similar materials you’d like to reuse, bring them along. We primarily use materials like banners and inflatables and will not focus on wetsuit material at this time. We cannot guarantee the use of all materials but will evaluate their suitability.
