Flotsam Flo Workshop: 2 Hours – Make a Purse or Pouch
Explore the world of upcycling with Flotsam Flo in our 2-hour workshop near Redruth. Discover how to transform plastic materials like banners and inflatables into your very own purse or pouch, or both, depending on your skill level and decoration preferences. Each item you create will be unique, as we use only reclaimed materials, so the photos are examples of past projects.
Workshop Details:
- Duration: 2 hours
- Capacity: Maximum of 3 participants for personalised instruction
- Experience Needed: None! We’ll guide you through every step, even if you’ve never sewn before.
What You’ll Learn:
- Using a sewing machine
- Workspace health and safety
- Sewing techniques for plastic materials
- Working with a simple pattern
- Sewing zippers
- Applying applique designs (if desired)
- Methods for upcycling plastic materials
Knowledge Required:
No prior sewing experience is required. Our flexible sessions cater to all skill levels, and we offer tasks that will challenge and enhance your abilities. Please note, this workshop is for adults (18+), with plans to offer sessions for younger participants in the future.

About Your Tutor:
Kate, founder of Flotsam Flo, has been working with plastic materials for three years and sewing with reclaimed material for many more. She is a qualified secondary school teacher with over a decade of experience in Design and Technology, including Textiles. Kate also has a First Class Honours degree in Graphic Design and is an active artist (check out Kate Doran Artist on Facebook). Recently, she led the 'Hellfire Kernow' creative community workshops in Redruth.
What to Bring:
You don’t need to bring anything, but if you have plastics, broken inflatables, or similar items you’d like to reuse, bring them along for possible incorporation into your project. We primarily use plastic materials like banners and inflatables and will not focus on wetsuit material at this time.

These items are intended for adult use only and may contain components or features that could pose a risk to younger users. For the safety of your children, please ensure that these products are kept out of their reach and used only by adults. Materials very likely to contain or be made of PVC.

Please only park here and use the designated Flotsam Flo car park and avoid parking across the road near the Big Green Biffa building for safety reasons.
Important Note:
While we aim to complete each project within the allotted time, this may not always be possible. We’ll ensure you’re confident finishing your item at home if necessary.
