Flotsam Flo Upcycled Waist Bag Workshop – 2.5 Hours
Experience the transformation of plastic waste into a stylish accessory with our 2.5-hour workshop near Redruth. In this session, you’ll learn to create your own Waist Bag using upcycled materials like banners and inflatables, which are challenging to recycle. The examples shown are from previous projects; since we work with reclaimed materials, every bag will be unique. Please note that the bumbags will be made from plastic, not wetsuit material, due to the limited number of machines for wetsuits. If you’re interested in a one-on-one session to work with wetsuits, please get in touch.
With a maximum of three participants per session, you’ll receive personalised instruction and support. No prior sewing experience is needed—our step-by-step guidance will ensure you can successfully complete your project.
During the workshop, you will:
- Learn to operate a sewing machine
- Understand health and safety practices in the workspace
- Master techniques for sewing with plastic materials
- Use a simple pattern to cut and assemble your bumbag
- Sew zips and add adjustable straps
- Apply applique designs (if required)
- Cut and secure straps to prevent fraying
- Explore methods for upcycling plastic materials
No previous sewing knowledge is required. The workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels, with tasks and techniques that will enhance your abilities. Sessions are for adults (18+), but we plan to offer workshops for younger participants in the future.

What to bring:
You don’t need to bring anything specific. However, if you have any plastics, broken inflatables, or similar items you’d like to reuse, feel free to bring them along. While we cannot guarantee that all materials can be used, we will evaluate their suitability. The workshop will focus on using plastic materials such as banners and inflatables rather than wetsuit materials.
