Flotsam Flo ‘Not Just a Toiletry Bag’ Workshop – 2 Hours
Discover the art of upcycling in our 2-hour workshop near Redruth. In this session, you’ll learn how to create a versatile ‘Not Just a Toiletry Bag’ using reclaimed plastic materials such as banners and inflatables, which are typically challenging to recycle. The images provided showcase previous creations; since we use repurposed materials, each bag will be unique.
With a maximum of three participants per session, you'll benefit from personalised guidance and support. No prior sewing experience is necessary.
In this workshop, you will:
- Explore a collection of materials to choose from
- Use a template to cut out the shapes for your item
- Learn techniques to sew with plastic materials
- Stitch your bag together, including adding a zip and optional applique designs
- Gain skills in using a sewing machine and understanding workspace safety
- Discover methods to effectively upcycle plastic materials
No previous sewing experience is required. The workshop is open to adults (18+), but we plan to offer sessions for younger participants in the future.

Included in the workshop:
- All necessary materials and equipment, including webbing straps, thread, zips and use of sewing machines
- Instruction from an experienced Design and Technology teacher

About your tutor:
Kate, the founder of Flotsam Flo, has been exploring and creating with plastic materials for three years and using reclaimed materials for many more. With over a decade of experience in teaching Design and Technology, including Textiles, Kate brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to her workshops. She is also a practicing artist (find her on Facebook as Kate Doran Artist) and holds a First Class Honours degree in Graphic Design. Kate recently led creative community workshops for ‘Hellfire Kernow’ in Redruth.
What to bring:
You don’t need to bring anything specific. However, if you have any plastic items or broken inflatables you’d like to reuse, feel free to bring them along. While we cannot guarantee the suitability of all materials, we will evaluate them for potential use. Our focus will be on plastics like banners and inflatables rather than wetsuit material due to the different skill set and equipment required.

Parking is available right outside the building in the designated car park. Please look for Dave the Flotsam Flo Van and park in the designated area only. Avoid parking across the road near the Big Green Biffa building for safety reasons.
Please note that while we aim to complete each project within the session time, this may not always be possible. We’ll ensure you’re confident in finishing your item at home if needed.
